Last week the NBA?s Los Angles Lakers re-inked North Vancouver?s Rob Sacr? to a new contract.
While Sacr?, who stands seven feet tall and has most of his hulking frame covered in ink (including an homage to his alma mater, Handsworth secondary), may be one of the most colourful North Shore athletes to make a statement in the world of pro sports he?s certainly not the only one.
There?s a long list of North and West Van athletes who?ve taken their athletic skills to the prime time. Here?s a partial list of some notable professional and Olympic athletes who grew up here:
Brett Hull (hockey), Gilbert Brule (hockey), Steve Kariya (hockey), Ben Maxwell (hockey), Trevor Smith (hockey), Dave Tomlinson (hockey), Joe Murphy (hockey), Grant Connell (tennis), Anna Rice (badminton), Ryan Dempster (baseball), Scott Richmond (baseball), Simon Pond (baseball), Jerome Pathon (football), Paris Jackson (football), Spencer Watt (football), Glen Suitor (football), Gerald Roper (football), Bruce Barnett (football), Jerome Erdman (football), Andrew English (football), Rob Meir (football), Brooks Findlay (football), Anthony Findlay (football), Karen Magnussen (skating) Ma?lle Ricker (snowboarding), Drew Neilson (snowboarding) Bryn Parry (golf), Lesley Tomlinson (mountain biking) and Andrew Shandro (mountain biking).
And there are more stars on the horizon: Morgan Rielly and Griffin Reinhart of West Vancouver, drafted fifth and ninth respectively at the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, should soon be making hockey headlines.
