Parents' education before migrating tied to children's achievement

Immigrant parents' education before migrating is more strongly tied to their children's achievement in the United States than any other social, economic, or linguistic parental attribute, either before or after migration. That's the conclusion of a new study in a special section of the September/October 2012 issue of Child Development on the children of immigrants.

The study was carried out by researchers at the Pennsylvania State University.

Immigrants come to the United States with different socioeconomic backgrounds and levels of proficiency in English. Past research hasn't fully considered how these factors affect children's academic achievement. For this study, researchers used parent data from the New Immigrant Survey, a longitudinal and nationally representative study of legal immigrants. To measure academic achievement, the researchers used scores from Woodcock Johnson III tests that were given as part of the New Immigrant Survey to more than 2,100 children ages 6 to 12 whose parents were included in the study. Among their findings:

• Premigration characteristics (such as education, work status, and occupation) of parents account fully for the test score disadvantage of Mexican-origin children of legal immigrants compared to non-Latino children of legal immigrants.
• The level of cognitive stimulation (how often a parent reads to a child, for example) in immigrant homes is significantly related to parents' premigration and English skills, over and above their postmigration socioeconomic status.
• Families' socioeconomic status before migrating contributes significantly to their socioeconomic status after migrating, but in different ways for different groups of immigrants. Specifically, immigrant parents who previously held higher-status occupations tend to find lower-status jobs after migration, while those who were previously unemployed are able to find jobs after migration.

"Our research reveals important aspects of continuity between immigrants' pre- and postmigration resources," suggests Suet-ling Pong, professor of education and sociology at the Pennsylvania State University and the study's lead author. "Even after the transformative event of immigration, family social privilege or disadvantage often persists and is transmitted to subsequent generations."

According to Pong, the results raise the possibility that adult literacy programs to increase education levels of immigrant parents could have benefits in both parents' and children's generations. Such approaches may be particularly important to consider for immigrant families from Mexico, she said.

The study was supported by the Population Research Institute at the Pennsylvania State

University under an infrastructure grant from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.

A new study posits that the clays, which often form on Earth either from the action of water on surface rocks or from the passage of hot water through porous underground formations, could just as easily have formed from cooling lava, bearing no witness whatsoever to a warm, wet climate in Mars' past.

The study doesn't rule out the sporadic appearance of water in some places on the Martian surface ? perhaps from near-surface water ice melted by the heat of a meteor impact or volcanic eruptions. Some clays could well have been formed through the weathering action of water released in these ways.

But if Earth look-a-likes and evidence from some Martian meteorites are any indication, a purely volcanic origin for much of Mars' clay-enriched deposits is as plausible as invoking a warm, wet climate during the planet's first billion years, according to the research team, led by Alain Meunier, a researcher at the University of Poitiers in France.

The bottom line: "Mars is a diverse place, and all of these processes happened at different points on the planet," says Bethany Ehlmann, a planetary scientist at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena and a member of the team reporting the results Sunday in the journal Nature Geoscience.

The planet shows clear evidence for weathering and hydrothermal processes altering the surface in various areas, she adds. Indeed, Gale Crater and its looming Mt. Sharp, home to NASA's latest Mars rover, Curiosity, displays features that are hard to explain unless flowing or standing water was present on the surface.

The questions, she says are these: Which process dominated on a planetary scale at the time, "and what does that have to say about the overall climate?"

The team's eruptive proposition comes at a time when the notion of a persistent warm-wet-climate during the planet's first billion years has been taking hits in other ways.

For instance, a team of researchers from the US and France has modeled Mars' early climate, when the sun would have been weaker. They conclude that the climate would have been too cold to sustain liquid water on the surface for very long. Instead, over time water ice would migrate to the poles, forming vast ice caps. Limited warming could occur from large impacts or volcanic eruptions, releasing enough water to carve features seen on the southern highlands.

?Everybody?s got a plan until they get punched in the mouth.?

?That?s a pithy way of saying where our country, perhaps the developed world, is at right now,? notes author James Howard Kunstler.

We?ve blown past the mileposts for global peak oil, says Kunstler in his new book, Too Much Magic: Wishful Thinking, Technology and the Fate of the Nation, and we expect technology to save us. Whether our cheap-oil lifestyle falls quickly with a single knockout blow or crumbles slowly with a battery of jabs, Kunstler is certain of one thing: We?re about to be walloped.

We?ve definitively entered the epoch Kunstler calls ?the long emergency,? an extended era of economic contraction and social stress caused by shrinking resources. Yet we refuse to see this, largely because we?re spellbound by the mighty systems we run with technological magic. Peak oil got you down? No worries; we?ll run those iPads with some other undiscovered, inexhaustible means of power.

Writers Paul Smyth and Judy George spoke with Kunstler about the end of the fossil fuel era and whatever comes next.

You talk about magical thinking in two ways: Not only do we believe we can solve our energy problems with new technology, but we infuse that belief with wishful thinking.

These two ideas are related, and I think elements of them have to be viewed historically. The last 150 years have amounted to such a cavalcade of wonders and technological marvels that we?ve literally programmed ourselves to expect it will continue indefinitely. This sequence of events ? the telephone, the light bulb, electricity in every home, airplanes, motion pictures, television, the computer and thousands of other conveniences to human life?programmed us to think there?s an endless supply of technological magic that can overcome anything.

I think we?re heading into a time-out from technological progress as we?ve known it?and by that I mean just the way I?ve described it, the expectation of endless magic. And I think that will come as an enormous shock to our culture.

Why are we in for a shock?

I don?t think the previous Dark Age that followed the collapse of Rome was quite the same as what we?re facing. That involved a profound and incremental series of losses in knowledge, technique and the ability to do things, everything from making good pottery and concrete to ways of organizing work.

Our situation now has much more potential for cultural damage, because our conditioning in technological progress is so extreme. The letdown may be awful when it becomes evident we?re not going to solve our energy problems with algae secretions, solar, wind or other alternative fuel schemes?that we?re not going to run Disney World, the interstate highway system, Wal-Mart and the military on any combination of other energy systems.

Then what happens?

This has enormous potential for disrupting our sense of reality. It?s hard to predict the kinds of reaction that this may generate, but I think you will have a society so profoundly disappointed by science and technology that it could propel us into a new dark age of superstition.

What?s changed since your 2005 book, The Long Emergency?

First, it?s apparent that the problems we have with capital formation and the disabling of the banking system may be overcoming the issues of resource scarcity and peak oil, in the sense that we?re rapidly losing the ability to finance the kind of resource discovery and production we hoped would compensate for peak oil.

Second, I observed in The Long Emergency that we were becoming very delusional about the set of predicaments that we?re facing. I?m a little shocked at the quality and character of the delusional thinking and where it?s coming from. When you see articles in the New York Times, the supposed newspaper of record, that the USA may soon become a net energy exporter, you know there?s some kind of problem with perhaps the entire intellectual class in America.

What do you mean?

When societies get badly stressed, delusional thinking increases. We are now in that situation.

When you traffic in delusional thinking, you tell yourself a lot of lies and untruths. This is a dangerously infectious process. Once you start doing it in things like banking and money matters and carrying it out in the practical form of accounting fraud, then you?re really putting your culture, your society in peril.

These problems infect all realms of practical existence, including politics, business, media, education?so you end up, for example, with the President of the United States telling the public that we have 100 years of shale gas. That?s just an untruth. The consequence is a society that cannot and will not prepare itself for the reality of the future.

If we accept peak oil?and the debate rages?we?ll need something else to keep the lights on. In The Long Emergency, you held out hope for nuclear energy to help manage a transition to what you see as inevitable decline.

I had mixed feelings in 2005 about how nuclear energy was going to work out. It was obvious that the hazards were monumental. The way I put it at the time was that nuclear energy was probably the only way we were going to keep the electricity running after a certain point, and I think that?s still categorically true.

But I don?t think we?re going to do it now, for a couple of reasons. One is the fiasco at Fukushima. It?s created a climate in which opposition, even in a crisis, could be enormous. But there was always a question of whether there would be a broad enough window of opportunity for us to ramp up a program of commissioning new nuclear plants, and I think that?s closing?perhaps, closed.

The other new wrinkle is that the capital formation issues have become so extreme in the last five years that now, even if we did have the will and consensus to go forward with the new generation of nukes, it?s improbable we?d be able to finance it.

Your message?that we?re heading for a re-set to an agrarian communities, that we?ll be living in ways we haven?t seen for several hundred years?is often not well received. How have you prepared for the future you envision?

I believe in facing the future with hope. I moved from a fairly successful small town, Saratoga Springs, to a smaller, more decrepit factory village 15 miles east. I bought three acres of land with the intention of growing a lot of food on it. I built a substantial garden that?s still under way.

I chose to live in a place I care about. I spend a lot of time playing music with my friends. I also put a lot of ongoing effort into consciously building a social network here. I?m thinking about starting a small business that would be a cafe and gathering spot, but that?s in the larval stage now.

QR codes have become commonplace on advertising campaigns, allowing a smartphone owner to scan the bar code on an ad to obtain more information about the product or campaign online.

U.S. customers can get their own QR code gravestones as well. Quiring Monuments, based in Seattle, Wash., has created a video for the company's version of the product:

Of course, adding publicly available information after a person's death raises some issues of privacy and taste. Though there are a few obvious precautions, such as adding password protection to a grave's QR code. In addition, if the product catches on, people will most likely begin stipulating in their estate planning what sort of information they'd want included.

"It's a new technology, it's something that there will be people who like it, there will be people who don't and that's the same in everything that we do," Nimmo said.

Nimmo says Chester Pearce charges customers about $500 for the QR code service, which can be placed on memorial benches or plaques in addition to the grave sites themselves.

Gill Tuttiet purchased one of the QR codes for her late husband, Timothy, and says he would have appreciated the forward-thinking gesture.

"Tim was quite outward-going and game for anything. I think this is the way forward and Tim would have wanted that, and it's making a process that's hard possibly easier," Tuttiet, 53, told Reuters.

Actor-turned-director story numero dos of the day: Although this won?t be his first stint behind the camera, Michael Keaton?s career is continuing to take interesting (and much improved) new twists and turns, as he?s now lining up to take over directing duties on indie pic Buttercup.

Alice O?Neil wrote the script, which sees a grown woman forced to take responsibility for her elderly father after his latest drunk driving arrest. Despite his obvious problems, being forced to spend time with pop makes her appreciate him more than she has, and to finally trust the other men in her life. Apparently.

This one has been through a bit of a search for talent on both sides of the camera. Jennifer Aniston and Alan Arkin were attached to the lead roles, but have since dropped off, while on the directing front, Sarah Polley and Niki Caro have both considered the gig.

Now, with Keaton on board, he?ll have to find some new leads. It?ll make his second turn calling the shots, following on from making 2008?s The Merry Gentleman, a task he shouldered only after the original director fell ill.

But it?ll have to wait until his schedule clears, as he?s going to be busy playing the villain in the new RoboCop and acting alongside Larry David and Jon Hamm in a new HBO TV movie.

I can clarify that.
When I'm at the workplace this is different. I am motivated and disciplined. I'm at the place where it is expected to work, and that's what I do. Also there's a clear border, when I'm home my workday is over and I don't have to worry about it.
Working from home is a lot harder, to me at least, and I heard other people mention it. When I'm home I am usually relaxing a bit, so the place has a complete different association with me. Also there's no clear border, I can work for 7 hours straigt and still feel the rest of the day that I should be doing stuff. Or take a day off, like any normal person, and feel that way the whole day. That gets tired very soon.
So I figured out I need a real work environment, and I can't work from home.

Modder Andy Rawson thinks he's found the secret to turning smartphones into super-cheap thermal imaging hardware. Inspired by his quest to find leaks in his old home and the high cost of professional gear, he set about building his own. A 64-zone temperature sensor connects to his iPhone via the dock, overlaying the data onto his camera display. He's planning to open-source the $150 hardware, and an Android variant of the hardware is currently in the works -- although details for both are currently thin on the ground, you can see his announcement video after the break.

The Next Phase in Our Adoption Journey | Love Makes A Family

I?ve been waiting to make this announcement until we were certain this was the route we were going, and I?m finally ready to make it official?

After quite a bit of thought and prayer, Travis and I have decided to pursue foster-to-adopt to adopt a baby. Foster-to-adopt is an option for adoption that means we will be licensed as foster parents, but we will only foster babies who are either fully free for adoption or considered ?legal risk? which means they are likely to be adoptable but not guaranteed. In pursuing this route for adoption, there is a chance that the baby we have in our home may have to return to a family member, but we both decided this is a risk we are willing to take. The way we see it, even if a baby in our home has to return to family, at least we were able to love on them and minister to them in the meantime. Our home is baby ready, and there are babies who need homes {even if they?re temporary homes}, so we should be a good match.

For one thing, our hearts couldn?t handle much more rejection. Time and time again, we were rejected by birthmoms because our home didn?t look fancy enough, they didn?t like our pets, they worried about our race, etc. etc. etc. It just got to be too much. Our hearts couldn?t handle much more rejection. Add to that our financial situation, which was growing tighter and tighter every month. We also had a growing desire in our hearts to do more. We have always wanted adoption to be a ministry for us, and private adoption wasn?t feeling like the right path for us. We started praying to God, ?What now??

Father?s Day landed five days after our first failed match. I didn?t want to go to church, but I went anyway because I know that when you least desire to go, that?s usually when God wants you there the most. Our pastor was gone and had asked a pastor friend of his to fill in for the sermon. When he got up to the pulpit, he started talking about adoption. I wanted to run. I?ve heard sermons before by people who have no concept of adoption. They blissfully describe how we?re all adopted into ?God?s family,? and how easy it is to get in.

However, adoption is not easy. Nor was the atonement Christ made for our sins. It is a narrow and difficult road to build your family by way of adoption, and so is the righteous life of those who choose to follow Jesus Christ. In a nutshell, I really dislike those sermons that paint a happy pretty picture of how ?easily? our salvation was bought, and thus how ?easy? it is for us to be ?adopted? into the family of Christ. Yes, all you must do is ask for forgiveness and confess to Jesus that you are a sinner and you believe he died and rose again to buy your salvation. That part is simple enough. But truly following Christ? That?s the hard part. And the sacrifice he made by dying on the cross under the burden of every sin of every human being who ever lived? I can?t imagine that was easy. Suffice it to say, I was not in the mood to listen to his sermon.

But then he changed his tone.

He said, ?You see, adoption is not easy??

I perked up.

On the screen at the front of sanctuary, a picture of two smiling beautiful little girls popped up.

?These are my daughters. Please allow me to share with you how they came to my family??

And he shared his personal, sometimes heartbreaking story of how he and his wife adopted their little girls. They were licensed as foster to adopt parents, took them each when they were just a few weeks old, and had the privilege of adopting them forever. My heart softened as I heard his story and listened carefully as he connected the rough road of adoption to the rough road for Christ that brought us salvation. It was a beautiful sermon.

I should also say that morning as we were getting ready to head off to church, there was an article in our local paper about a young couple serving {with Buckner?s} as foster parents to babies. I read the article and felt a tugging on my heart and even jokingly said to Travis, ?Maybe this is what God wants us to do? Those babies are really in need?? We headed out the door without much further discussion about it.

After the pastor?s sermon, the former music minister?s wife turned around and said to me {through her own tears}, ?I am not sure what you got from that sermon, but I?m certain that was intended for you!? I couldn?t deny it. I knew I was meant to hear that sermon. I just wasn?t sure what the next step was. I felt the Lord was whispering to my heart. ?Talk to him.? I passed Travis a note scrawled on our morning program, ?We need to visit with him.? He nodded. I cried huge boo-hoo tears through his entire sermon, then waited quietly in my pew for him to shake hands with people afterward. I waited and waited as people came up and thanked him for filling in for our pastor and welcomed him back to our congregation. After a while, I got up the courage to approach him. I asked him, ?Could you please tell me about how you came to adopt your daughters? The process you went through??

He responded, ?Sure! Are you just curious about adoption or considering it for your family or what?? I laughed and said, ?Well, I guess we should start with our story?? His heart broke for us, and before he continued, he insisted we also meet his wife {because, as he said, she knew more about the foster to adopt world than he did}. We met her and they both sat down with us while their beautiful children {some adopted, some biological} ran around and played with Buggy. They gave us so much information and so much encouragement. We decided to at least look into this whole foster to adopt thing.

On Monday {yes, the very next day}, I made a call to Buckner?s Children?s Home. Buckner?s is a private Christian agency that specializes in foster care and group children homes for the thousands of children in foster care in America. The man on the phone was very helpful and encouraging and offered to meet with us the next week to further discuss our options.

From there, the rest, as they say, is history. We prayed and prayed about this decision and decided that God was leading us {perhaps all along} to open our home up as a mission field for his youngest and most impressionable children. We realize there are risks associated with foster care, but we feel that if God has called us to this ministry, then he will equip us to handle whatever comes our way. Nothing worth doing is easy anyway. We have always wanted our adoption story to be a ministry to a child. We have always hoped that adoption for us would not only save us and bring us the large family we have always dreamed of, but might also save a child in need of a loving family. This is the way to do that.

I hope that soon we have a baby in our home, even if he or she is not our forever baby. We are more than ready. My heart actually aches for a baby to care for. We will be licensed for babies age 0 to 2. I?m excited and anxious to move forward, and I couldn?t wait to tell you all about our decision.

I will say that we have nothing but wonderful things to say about the private agency we were working with. If anyone is considering adoption, I would highly recommend Children?s Connections, Inc. They have offices all over Texas and also work with families all over the country. They?ve recently had a HUGE baby boom and are in particular need right now for families desiring to adopt African American babies. Avoid lights that flood the ceiling surface with light, instead, choosing recessed can lighting or low-hanging pendant-style fixtures. These types of lighting do not direct light across the ceiling, which helps in hiding ripples, bulges or patched cracks.

Vitamin D deficiency has profound effects on rat testicles, including dramatically reducing spermatogenesis. Vitamin D deficient male rats were 73% less likely to successfully father pups than vitamin D sufficient males. Vitamin D restored virility to vitamin D deficient male rats and should do the same for vitamin D deficient male humans.

What else are men interested in besides sex? Hair growth! In fact, hair follicles have large numbers of vitamin D receptors but their function is unknown. Although there are no human studies showing vitamin D will grow men a new head of hair, vitamin D like drugs do grow hair in mice. (By the way, both my wife and my barber have told me my head has stopped balding and I've kept my 25(OH)-vitamin D level around 50 ng/ml for several years.) One relevant animal study should get the attention of men; the title contains two of their favorite words: "nude" and "hair growth."

What about weight? Can you see the headlines in the men's' fitness magazines: "Vitamin D Reduces Weight." Although dozens of studies have found that those with the highest 25(OH)-vitamin D blood levels weigh the least, most vitamin D scientists explain this by pointing out that vitamin D is stored in fat tissue, thus lowering blood levels. Of course that does not preclude vitamin D from also having either a direct or indirect effect on weight.

One study tried to answer that question by looking directly at vitamin D intake and body weight. The authors found an inverse correlation. That is, the more vitamin D in your diet, the less you weighed! If you have a few minutes, test your knowledge by taking our quiz on obesity and vitamin D.

Finally, we turn to athletic performance. After sex, hair growth, and obesity, improving athletic performance would certainly make American men pay attention to vitamin D. Actually, what we are asking is: "Does the most potent steroid hormone system in the human body have any effects on balance, muscle strength, muscle mass, reaction time, etc?" When asked that way, it would be surprising if it had none. In fact, dozens of studies suggest vitamin D will improve athletic performance.

If vitamin D improves athletic performance, then we'd predict physical fitness should peak in the late summer when 25(OH)-vitamin D levels peak. The only two studies that looked at season of the year and athletic performance of trained athletes found physical fitness peaked exactly then.

Genetic ablation of vitamin D receptors caused profound impairment in the motor functions of mice. Furthermore, mice without the vitamin D receptor gene showed increased anxiety; performance anxiety is something all men want to avoid. Babies born to vitamin D deficient rats are permanently and irreversibly brain damaged, proving that vitamin D has profound effects on developing neural tissue. (We will have more on this important, and tragic, research coming out of Australia in a future newsletter.)

Muscle strength is important to athletes and it correlated with 25(OH)-vitamin D levels in older men. A vitamin D like drug improved muscle strength in vitamin D deficient older women. In fact, it did the same thing to a group of vitamin D deficient younger women. Furthermore, improved lower extremity function was directly associated with higher 25(OH)-vitamin D levels.

Athletes need to be quick. A single injection of 600,000-units of vitamin D significantly improved reaction times in older adults. Furthermore, higher 25(OH)-vitamin D levels were also independently associated with better reaction time and better performance time.

Athletes need good balance. The beneficial effect vitamin D has on balance (reduced falls) is not limited to profoundly vitamin D deficient populations; a vitamin D-like-drug improved balance in the general elder population, even those with "normal" 25(OH)-vitamin D levels. A more recent study showed higher 25(OH)-vitamin D levels correlated with better gait speed, balance and muscle strength.

Vitamin D also appears to maintain muscle mass in older people but, no one has reported similar studies of young adults. A recent review concluded that vitamin D is an authentic strength preserving hormone, at least in the elderly. There is no reason to think it has any less effect on vitamin D deficient younger persons.

Finally, debilitating chronic pain sidelines many athletes. One Mayo clinic study found that virtually all patients treated for chronic pain have low 25(OH)-vitamin D levels. Furthermore, in what must be one of the largest open studies ever reported, 360 patients with low back pain in Saudi Arabia responded exceptionally well to treatment with physiological doses of vitamin D. Like virtually all areas of vitamin D research, we are still awaiting definitive research.

An impressive scientific literature suggests that vitamin D may improve athletic performance. This should surprise no one as other steroid hormone systems improve athletic performance. One difference is that the U.S. government is going to find it hard to regulate the vitamin D steroid hormone system; the sun is both a free and robust source of vitamin D. Of course, oral vitamin D is toxic in overdose and vitamin D toxicity would greatly impair athletic performance. Smart athletes would get enough sun, or take enough cholecalciferol, to keep their 25(OH)-vitamin D levels around 50 ng/ml, year around. But then, smart non-athletes would do the same.

What would happen if researchers gave physiological doses of cholecalciferol to men for a year or two and studied their sex life, hair growth, weight and athletic performance? Would vitamin D improve men's sex life? Would it make them more virile? Would they stop going bald? Would they lose weight? Would they become better athletes?

We don't know. However, a rapidly expanding scientific literature indicates vitamin D lowers their risk of heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, multiple sclerosis, autoimmune illness, depression and seventeen different types of cancer. It now appears likely that vitamin D has an important role in treating those killer diseases as well.

But that doesn't really interest most American men. Men want to know about the important stuff. Why not start taking 2,000 units of cholecalciferol every day and see if your sex life improves, your hair grows back, you lose weight, and you become a better athlete? (And, don't forget to measure down there; after all, you never know).
