BEST OF: A galaxy of North Shore sports stars

Last week the NBA?s Los Angles Lakers re-inked North Vancouver?s Rob Sacr? to a new contract.

While Sacr?, who stands seven feet tall and has most of his hulking frame covered in ink (including an homage to his alma mater, Handsworth secondary), may be one of the most colourful North Shore athletes to make a statement in the world of pro sports he?s certainly not the only one.

There?s a long list of North and West Van athletes who?ve taken their athletic skills to the prime time. Here?s a partial list of some notable professional and Olympic athletes who grew up here:

Brett Hull (hockey), Gilbert Brule (hockey), Steve Kariya (hockey), Ben Maxwell (hockey), Trevor Smith (hockey), Dave Tomlinson (hockey), Joe Murphy (hockey), Grant Connell (tennis), Anna Rice (badminton), Ryan Dempster (baseball), Scott Richmond (baseball), Simon Pond (baseball), Jerome Pathon (football), Paris Jackson (football), Spencer Watt (football), Glen Suitor (football), Gerald Roper (football), Bruce Barnett (football), Jerome Erdman (football), Andrew English (football), Rob Meir (football), Brooks Findlay (football), Anthony Findlay (football), Karen Magnussen (skating) Ma?lle Ricker (snowboarding), Drew Neilson (snowboarding) Bryn Parry (golf), Lesley Tomlinson (mountain biking) and Andrew Shandro (mountain biking).

And there are more stars on the horizon: Morgan Rielly and Griffin Reinhart of West Vancouver, drafted fifth and ninth respectively at the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, should soon be making hockey headlines.

Samsung Schedules Unpacked Episode 2 Event For September 4th, Teases New Galaxy Note Hardware

It was only a matter of time. Samsung just sent out invitations to the their latest Unpacked press event, this time labeled "Episode 2." It's scheduled for 1PM EST on September 4th, just under one month from today, before the annual IFA show in Berlin. Android newshounds will recall that the original Galaxy Note got its debut at the same venue back in 2011.

unpack

There's little doubt that new Note hardware will be the focus of this event: stylized text reading "NOTE THE DATE" is emblazoned on the invite. The Galaxy Note III is the obvious choice for a reveal, but as they say, it's not over until the fat lady sings. The Galaxy Note 10.1 is also due for a refresh, and Samsung is always ready to show off entirely new toys. Note-style functionality for Windows hardware wouldn't be out of the question, though it would be a bit out of our wheelhouse.

The competition for "phablets" is heating up. After Sammy defined the super-sized category two years ago, all kinds of competitors have arrived from LG (Optimus G Pro), Sony (Xperia Z Ultra), Asus (Fonepad), and even Samsung's cheaper offerings like the Galaxy Mega. Just yesterday an alleged HTC leak showed a 5.9-inch One Max device, probably hoping to grab a piece of the market for the Taiwanese phone maker. It will be interesting to see if the two manufacturers face off in Berlin.

First Red Dragon footage shown from 6K source, boasts three more stops DR video

After a considerable delay from its slated late 2012 release date, the 6K Red Dragon sensor is finally ready -- and it seems to have been worth the wait. The first test footage (after the break) has come from cinematographer and Red booster Mark Toia, who stress-tested it in difficult conditions like high contrast daylight and dark night scenes. Afterwards, he said the camera has three more f-stops of dynamic range than the MX-equipped Epic and thinks the new sensor brings the "best highlight falloff I've ever seen from any digital camera," including Sony's $65,000 CineAlta F65 4K model. Though Red put on a show of upgrading Epic and Epic-X cameras with Dragon earlier this spring, the company recently said that deliveries would start in September. Meanwhile, Dragon equipped cameras are in the hands of other notable DPs and directors too, like Peter Jackson, Michael Bay and Darius Woski -- meaning you can likely expect a deluge of Dragon eye-candy over the coming weeks.

Britain sets out bank capital rules timetable

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's banks will have to hold total capital equivalent to 8 percent of their risk-weighted assets from the start of 2015, the Bank of England said on Friday.

The central's bank's Prudential Regulation Authority, which supervises lenders, was setting out how it plans to apply new European Union bank capital rules in Britain.

The PRA has already forced big lenders to meet or exceed the new rules and Friday's consultation largely refers to smaller banks and other financial institutions that must also comply.

"Well capitalised and resilient firms are crucial for ensuring financial stability and supporting UK growth," PRA chief executive and BoE Deputy Governor Andrew Bailey said in a statement.

TSX ends higher on economic data, energy jump

By John Tilak

TORONTO (Reuters) - Canada's main stock index climbed on Thursday after a burst of data from China, Europe and the United States showed the global economic recovery was strengthening, boosting the price of oil and fueling a rally in shares of energy producers.

Investors also digested a wave of quarterly results, from industry bellwethers such as Suncor Energy Inc , Barrick Gold Corp and Enbridge Inc .

U.S. crude oil prices jumped more than 2.5 percent, driven by supply problems in Africa and the Iraq as well as the news on the global economy.

The gains in energy shares follow a recent narrowing of the discount between the price of heavy Western Canada Select oil produced by many of the region's companies and the lighter West Texas Intermediate benchmark.

"Investors are having more confidence in energy," said Robert McWhirter, president and portfolio manager at Selective Asset Management. "Now that the spread has narrowed, people are convinced that oil companies are going to make some decent money."

An industry report showed that the pace of growth in the U.S. manufacturing sector accelerated in July to the highest level in two years as new orders surged, supporting the view the economy will pick up in the second half of the year.

Separate data indicated the euro zone was slowly starting to emerge from recession, while business surveys showed China's manufacturing sector was stabilizing.

The improving global economic outlook lifted commodity prices and boosted investor sentiment in the resource-sensitive Canadian market.

Also on Thursday, the European Central Bank said it would not tighten monetary policy until well into next year, a day after the U.S. Federal Reserve said it will maintain the pace of its bond-buying program for now.

Investors relished the combination of positive economic data and a lack of indication of imminent central bank policy tightening.

"It looks like we might be into a Goldilocks-type scenario, where the economy is starting to do better, but not so well that it pushes the central banks to tighten," said Colin Cieszynski, senior market analyst at CMC Markets Canada.

The Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX composite index <.gsptse> closed up 107.32 points, or 0.86 percent, at 12,593.96.

Eight of the 10 main sectors on the index were higher.

Shares of energy producers shot up 2.3 percent, benefiting from earnings reports and higher oil prices.

Suncor posted a second-quarter profit that missed analyst expectations by a penny, reflecting factors including the precautionary shutdown of third-party pipelines due to flooding in northern Alberta. Shares of Suncor, Canada's largest energy company, climbed 3.9 percent to C$33.74 and were the biggest positive influence on the market.

Enbridge Inc , Canada's largest pipeline company, reported a 12 percent rise in second-quarter adjusted profit due to higher contracted volumes, lifting its shares 1.3 percent to C$46.18.

Shares of Bombardier Inc fell slightly to C$4.95 after the aircraft and train maker reported a 22 percent rise in second-quarter profit as its train business grew, but pushed back the date when its new C-Series plane will be ready for delivery.

Barrick reported stronger-than-expected quarterly results, sending its shares up 2.7 percent even as it recorded an $8.7 billion impairment charge and cut its dividend by 75 percent.

Shares of Catamaran Corp were up 9.1 percent at C$59.03 after the pharmacy benefit manager said it would buy privately held Restat LLC for $409.5 million to expand its client base.
