The Beautiful Visualization of Relationships in Your Favorite Movies

The Beautiful Visualization of Relationships in Your Favorite Movies

Movies exist in their own world, with their own rules, with the characters having their own relationships. And though we may know every one of those characters, they might not all be connected together. These visualizations show how characters connect with each other in a beautiful constellation. You can almost gauge a movie by how its characters connect.

Facebook to strengthen security with old-school crypto technique

Facebook security

Facebook

Facebook is working on implementing an security measure that would would make eavesdropping on your encrypted traffic with the website extremely difficult. Amazingly, the technique has been around since 1992, yet very few websites use it.

Many websites support what's called HTTPS, an encrypted version of the normal HTTP protocol used to weave together the World Wide Web. But the way it's implemented, there's the possibility that a hacker (or the NSA) could get hold of the site's "master key," allowing them to peep in on all the site's encrypted traffic like it was never secured in the first place.

"Perfect forward secrecy" is an advanced form of HTTPS that throws away the master key and essentially makes a new key every time someone connects. That way, even if a would-be eavesdropper manages to intercept or crack one key, they'd only have access to that one connection ? and only for as long as it lasted.

Google implemented this in 2011, and now Facebook is working on adding it as well, according to CNET. It make things a lot harder for someone trying to tap into your traffic, but just keep in mind, it won't prevent data from escaping via bugs or those legally required disclosures we've been hearing so much about.

Tunisia frees three Europeans jailed for topless feminist protest

By Tarek Amara

TUNIS (Reuters) - A Tunisian court on Wednesday decided to release three European feminist activists who staged a topless protest in Tunis last month against the Islamist-led government.

The release of the three women -- one German and two French members the women's rights group, Femen -- could ease the anger of the European Union, Tunisia's main economic ally.

They were sentenced to four months in jail for indecency earlier this month after their May 29 protest to call for the release of fellow activist Tunisian Amina Tyler.

Tyler, 18, remains in custody, awaiting trial. She was arrested in Kairouan on May 19 after she hung a feminist banner from the wall of a mosque and tried to bare her breasts, on the same day that the Islamist Ansar al-Sharia group held a rally in the city that authorities tried to ban.

The decision to jail the three European women angered France, Germany and the European Union who urged the Islamist-led government to reform its laws on freedom of expression.

"The court sentenced these three activists to four months suspended jail terms... (the) women would leave Tunisia as soon as possible", one of their lawyers, Souhaib Bahri, told Reuters.

Witnesses said the women left the prison of Manouba late on Wednesday night.

Marguerite Stern and Pauline Hillier of France and Josephine Markmann of Germany apologized on Wednesday during their appeals hearing.

"I didn't think it was going to shock Tunisians to that extent. I would never do it again. We want to return to our country and our loved ones," Hillier said.

Femen has staged protests across Europe, mainly against Russia's detention of the all-female Pussy Riot punk band last year.

The new government is led by a moderate Islamist party, Ennahda, but hardline Islamist Salafists are seeking a broader role for religion, alarming a secular elite which fears this could undermine individual freedoms, women's rights and democracy.

Tunisia was the first country to be rocked by an "Arab Spring" uprising, inspiring similar revolutions in Egypt and Libya.

Secular groups say the Islamist-led government is trying to stifle freedom of expression and creativity, but the government strongly denies this.

The China Edit | Gieves & Hawkes, Rising Retail Rents, I.T's New ...

?Styled in Britain, Owned In China? (The New York Times)

?For more than two centuries, Gieves & Hawkes at No. 1 Savile Row in London has been creating suits for the men of the British royal family ? including the dark navy one that Prince William wore 2010 to announce his engagement to Kate Middleton. Yet today, in the upscale IFC Mall in Hong Kong, it is common to see a customer from mainland China trying on a double-breasted blazer similar to one owned by the prince and happily paying 12,000 Hong Kong dollars, or $1,550, for it. This quintessential British brand, owned by Trinity Limited of China, now has its largest customer base in China and has been gathering a tailor?s knowledge of these new clients? ?I want to maintain the British aristocratic accent but move the collection in a more international direction,? said Jason Basmajian, former artistic director of the Italian men?s wear house Brioni, who was appointed creative director of Gieves & Hawkes early this year.?

?Shop Rents Driven by Cashed-up Youth? (South China Morning Post)

?Shop rents in most mainland cities are expected to increase steadily as retail sales continue to grow on the back of a vast market of young, fashion-conscious shoppers who are willing to spend a significant proportion of their monthly incomes in stores, says property consultancy CBRE. The trend will not be confined to the first-tier cities, and tier-two cities, which are on the radar of international retailers, are expected to see a steady rise in new entrants to their retail markets.?

?Hong Kong?s I.T Limited Will Open Three New Mainland China Outlets? (China Retail News)

?Hong Kong fashion apparel retailer I.T Limited plans to invest HKD300 million to enhance its position in Hong Kong while expanding its business map in mainland China by opening three new stores in Beijing, Shanghai, and Tianjin in July 2013. In addition, its new store in Chengdu is expected to open at the end of 2013 or the beginning of 2014. The group?s largest project in 2013 is the new Galeries Lafayette project, which will be open in September in Beijing. Located in Xidan, the new Galeries Lafayette is a joint operating project by I.T Limited and Galeries Lafayette Group. With an area of five million square feet, the new Galeries Lafayette department store will have specialty stores of various brands, including Saint Laurent, Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta, Fendi, Chloe, and Givenchy. Those stores will cover 70% of the total area; while the remaining 30% will display products and brands sold via I.T. By opening four new stores, I.T will have 11 stores in mainland China.?

?The ?China Price? Is Not Right? (Jing Daily)

?Foreign brands in China are expensive. This is not just in relation to China?s lower income level: due to a mixture of duties, taxes, logistics costs, and price positioning, the price of foreign brands in China typically ranges from 30 to 80 percent more expensive than in their home markets. Among China?s sophisticated consumers, the price gap between China and the rest of the world has become common knowledge?especially among the aspirational and affluent white-collar workers who are expected to drive growth in the premium and luxury segments. These consumers are increasingly global and savvy in their purchasing behavior, have the opportunity to shop abroad, and are increasingly doing so. In an ongoing SmithStreet study of Chinese luxury customers in Europe, for example, every single respondent has essentially stopped buying luxury goods in mainland China, citing price as the primary (and typically solitary) reason.?

?Americans Exit Harrods Top 10 As Chinese Flock To London Store? (Bloomberg)

?The days of Americans being the biggest overseas shoppers at London?s Harrods store are over. While seven years ago U.S. visitors were the top foreign spenders at the purveyor of luxury fashions and specialty teas, they are now outnumbered by wealthy customers from China and the Middle East, according to Managing Director Michael Ward. ?It is probable today that America will not feature in our top 10 of overseas customers because of the growth of the east and the mineral- and oil-rich nations,? Ward, who has been in charge for more than seven years, said in an interview in his office at the 164-year-old store. China is ?by far No. 1.??

Windows 8.1 Preview Gets Redesigned Windows Store With Automatic App Updates And Bing-Powered Recommendations

windows_storeFor the Windows 8.1 Preview, Microsoft took a close look at its Windows Store and decided to give it a facelift and make a few changes to the way the operating system handles Store apps. Windows Store apps are now automatically updated in the background, for example, and the store features a new look that puts a strong emphasis on recommendations instead of the focus on categories in the last version.

Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR

The Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR ($399.95 direct) is Nikon's take on a popular lens design?the enhanced kit lens. Most SLRs ship with an 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 zoom that cuts some corners in its manufacturing quality and optical design in order to keep costs down. This longer zoom design generally comes in at a higher price point, but is well-built, and has better optics, but still retains a rather modest f/3.5-5.6 aperture. The Nikkor 18-105mm doesn't quite offer the zoom range of competing 18-135mm lenses, but it's sharp and priced more reasonably than others in this class, including the Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM.

The lens measures 3.5 by 3 inches (HD) and weighs 14.8 ounces. It uses 67mm front filters, and includes a lens hood. The close focus distance is 1.5 feet at all focal lengths; working that close will allow you to create a shallow depth of field, even with the modest aperture. It is compatible with Nikon DX cameras, but can also be used with full-frame models in a crop mode. Regardless of what body you attach it to, it captures a 35mm-equivalent field of view of 27-157mm. The Vibration Reduction system helps to compensate for camera shake related to handheld shooting; it can be toggled via a switch on the lens barrel, as can the manual and automatic focus settings. The zoom ring occupies most of the barrel, it's textured to enhance your grip when adjusting the focal length. The manual focus ring sits behind it; it's much smaller, and can be a little uncomfortable to adjust. This is a lens that's designed for use with an autofocus camera. Other 18-135mm lenses, including the Sony 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 and Pentax SMC DA 18-135mm F/3.5-5.6 ED AL (IF) DC WR are designed similarly. The Canon 18-135mm reverses the positions of the zoom and focus ring, which makes manual focus a bit more comfortable.

I used Imatest to check the sharpness of the lens when paired with the Nikon D7100. It exceeded 1,800 lines per picture height, our cutoff for a sharp photo, at all tested apertures and focal lengths. At 18mm f/3.5 the lens managed an impressive 2,506 lines, which increased to 2,860 lines at f/5.6. The edges were a smidge soft, 1,567 lines, at the widest aperture, but they improved to 1,882 lines when stopped down to f/5.6. The knock on performance at 18mm is barrel distortion?the lens records 3.5 percent there, which gives images a slight fisheye look. This can be corrected in software?the distortion slider in Lightroom does the trick?but you'll have to spend a little bit of time post-processing photos in order to get the best images from this lens at its widest angle.

Zooming to 35mm narrows the maximum aperture to f/4.5, but eliminates the barrel distortion. It shows 1 percent pincushion, which makes lines in images curve slightly inward; this isn't as noticeable as the barrel distortion on the wide end. Sharpness is good here as well; 2,714 lines at f/4.5 with decent (1,700 lines) edge performance. Stoping down to f/4.6 boosts the resolution to 2,801 lines. Edges are about the same, even at f/8.

The 70mm setting gives you a maximum aperture of f/5.3 and adds some problematic pincushion distortion?it increases to 2.2 percent. The resolution score here is good, 2,591 lines, but edges soften to 1,454 lines. Overall sharpness dips a bit at f/8, dropping to a reasonable 2,681 lines, but the edges improve to 1,567 lines. We're seeing a pattern here; the center and middle areas of the frame are doing well as you zoom in, but the edges are suffering as a result.

Distortion is about the same, 2 percent, at 105mm, and the sharpness at the maximum f/5.6 aperture is also good?2,558 lines. Edge performance is a little weak here as well at 1,521 lines. Things stay about the same when you stop down to f/8. Despite its issues with edge sharpness?which is often an issue with zooms?the Nikon does an overall better job with sharpness in comparison to the Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM. That lens is sharp at the wide and tele end, but softens a bit at the 50mm setting at its maximum aperture, and also shows edge softness, as well as barrel and pincushion distortion.

Every zoom lens includes some compromises in its design. The Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR limits its zoom range compared with similar lenses, but delivers photos with acceptable center-weighted sharpness throughout its range. There's some distortion and the lens isn't sharp edge-to-edge like a good prime or a pro-grade zoom, but photographers who are in the market for this level of optic will be pleased with the results. It can create a shallow depth of field under the right conditions, but will never be a bokeh machine like a fast 50mm prime lens or a 70-200mm telephoto optic. If you're unhappy with the zoom range the 18-55mm kit lens delivers, or simply have the budget to get a better lens with your new D-SLR, this is a worthwhile upgrade, especially when you consider the price. The Nikon 18-105mm is priced at $400, while competing 18-135mm lenses all hover around the $500 mark.

Robo-pets may contribute to quality of life for those with dementia

June 24, 2013 ? Robotic animals can help to improve the quality of life for people with dementia, according to new research.

A study has found that interacting with a therapeutic robot companion made people with mid- to late-stage dementia less anxious and also had a positive influence on their quality of life.

The pilot study, a collaboration led by Professor Wendy Moyle from Griffith University, Australia and involving Northumbria University's Professor Glenda Cook and researchers from institutions in Germany, investigated the effect of interacting with PARO -- a robotic harp seal -- compared with participation in a reading group. The study built on Professor Cook's previous ethnographic work carried out in care homes in North East England.

PARO is fitted with artificial intelligence software and tactile sensors that allow it to respond to touch and sound. It can show emotions such as surprise, happiness and anger, can learn its own name and learns to respond to words that its owner uses frequently.

Eighteen participants, living in a residential aged care facility in Queensland, Australia, took part in activities with PARO for five weeks and also participated in a control reading group activity for the same period. Following both trial periods the impact was assessed, using recognised clinical dementia measurements, for how the activities had influenced the participants' quality of life, tendency to wander, level of apathy, levels of depression and anxiety ratings.

The findings indicated that the robots had a positive, clinically meaningful influence on quality of life, increased levels of pleasure and also reduced displays of anxiety.

Research has already shown that interaction with animals can have a beneficial effect on older adults, increasing their social behaviour and verbal interaction and decreasing feelings of loneliness. However, the presence of animals in residential care home settings can place residents at risk of infection or injury and create additional duties for nursing staff.

This latest study suggests that PARO companions elicit a similar response and could potentially be used in residential settings to help reduce some of the symptoms -- such as agitation, aggression, isolation and loneliness -- of dementia.

Prof Cook, Professor of Nursing at Northumbria University, said: "Our study provides important preliminary support for the idea that robots may present a supplement to activities currently in use and could enhance the life of older adults as therapeutic companions and, in particular, for those with moderate or severe cognitive impairment.

"There is a need for further research, with a larger sample size, and an argument for investing in interventions such as PARO robots which may reduce dementia-related behaviours that make the provision of care challenging as well as costly due to increased use of staff resources and pharmaceutical treatment."

The researchers of the pilot study have identified the need to undertake a larger trial in order to increase the data available. Future studies will also compare the effect of the robot companions with live animals.

Jon Gosselin: I live in the woods now

Celebs

Jon Gosselin in 2012.

Once Jon Gosselin lived in a large house in Pennsylvania and his life unrolled on television in front of millions. Now, the dad of eight lives "in the woods," and says he doesn't even have an address.

Gosselin didn't clarify exactly where or how he lives, but he confirmed to VH1's "The Gossip Table" that he's taken to a more private life after living in an apartment where paparazzi and others "figured out where I was."

Gosselin, then-wife Kate, and their twins and sextuplets starred on "Jon and Kate Plus 8" for five seasons before divorcing. The show continued as "Kate Plus 8" despite Jon Gosselin suing to prevent filming of his children.

Gosselin was asked if Kim Kardashian and Kanye West should allow their newborn daughter, North, to appear on the reality show "Keeping Up With the Kardashians," and unsurprisingly, he didn't think so.

"I wanted to raise my kids off television, so I changed my mind," he said. "So I would definitely not film with my newborn child."

Gosselin was also asked if he still wore Ed Hardy clothing, the brand he favored at the height of his tabloid fame in 2009. He said no, adding "I gave all my (Hardy clothing) to my mother." Tattoo artist Hardy recently told the New York Post that an association with Gosselin "tanked" his clothing brand.

He also said he'd be interested in appearing on "Dancing With the Stars," as his ex-wife Kate Gosselin famously did in 2010. She was the fourth celebrity eliminated on the show's tenth season, and partner Tony Dovolani later joked he needed "a lot of therapy" after partnering with her.

"I feel like I could probably get further than her," Jon Gosselin said.

Garmin Monterra a 4-inch handheld Android GPS

Garmin Montera

Garmin today announced the Monterra, a handheld GPS device with a 4-inch display running Android. It's got a proper WIfi connection, and full access to Google Play.

The device itself is rugged and waterproof, Garmin says. It's loaded with sensors you'd expect in such a device, including a three-axis compass, accelerometer and gyroscope, barometric altimeter and built-in UV sensor. It's running a dual-band GPS and GLONASS as well. It's got an 8-megapixel camera as well that records video in 1080p. Bluetooth 3.0 is on board, as is NFC (useful for ... NFCing in the wilderness) and is ANT+ capable for those fitness trackers.

One of Garmin's standout features on the Montera, however, is 3D MapMerge, which combines multiple kinds of maps, like TOPO, basemap or BirdsEye imagery.

Stanley Cup Finals 2013: Blackhawks Top Bruins In Game 5, 3-1

CHICAGO ? Chicago's top line has been too much for the Boston Bruins to handle.

Patrick Kane had two more goals in Saturday night's 3-1 victory over the Bruins in Game 5, bringing the Chicago Blackhawks one victory from their second Stanley Cup title in four years. Since Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville tinkered with his top line before Game 4 to reunite his two best players, Kane and Jonathan Toews, the two have combined for four goals and seven points.

And, most important, two wins.

But the star-studded line ? including Bryan Bickell at left wing ? may not be intact for Game 6 on Monday night in Boston. Toews spent the entire third period on the bench, though Quenneville said he is hopeful Chicago's captain will be able to play in the potential clincher.

Kane and Toews have spent most of their young careers playing alongside one another, often with dazzling results. They've already won one Stanley Cup, and helped the Blackhawks set an NHL record for season-opening points earlier this year.

With the Blackhawks facing Boston and its bruising tandem of Zdeno Chara and Dennis Seidenberg in the Stanley Cup finals, however, Quenneville decided to split up his young stars. If Boston was going to shut down both Kane and Toews, it would need someone besides Chara and Seidenberg to do it.

The experiment failed. Pretty miserably.

With no goals from either Kane or Toews in the first three games, the Blackhawks found themselves trailing the Bruins 2-1. Needing a spark, Quenneville put Kane and Toews back together again for Game 4.

Such a simple switch, yet it's turned the series around.

Toews scored his first goal in almost a month ? May 25, to be exact ? in Game 4, while Kane got his first goal of the series. It was more of the same Saturday, with Kane's quick reflexes putting Boston on the ropes.

With 2:33 left in the first period, Johnny Oduya's slapshot hit Seidenberg's stick and shattered the blade. The puck trickled behind Boston goalie Tuukka Rask and Kane scooped it up and tucked it into the net to give Chicago a 1-0 lead.

He doubled the score just over five minutes into the second period, getting help from both Toews and Bickell.

Bickell picked up a pass from Toews and took a shot from the left side, along the goal line. He got his own rebound and circled around the net, looking like a shark searching for prey. He finally spotted an opening, but the puck caromed off the side of the net.

Kane pounced on the rebound, and Rask never had a chance.

Turkish police break up protest, PM lambasts opponents

By Daren Butler and Nick Tattersall

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Turkish riot police fired water cannon to disperse thousands of anti-government demonstrators in central Istanbul on Saturday, as Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan castigated those behind protests he said had played into the hands of Turkey's enemies.

The latest unrest in Taksim Square punctured six days of relative calm in Turkey's biggest city, although it was a long way from matching the ferocity of previous clashes there and in other cities that began more than three weeks ago.

Demonstrators threw carnations at a phalanx of officers carrying shields who slowly advanced towards them, flanked by water cannon, to clear the square.

"Police, don't betray your people!" activists shouted after they had been scattered into streets leading to Taksim. Witnesses said police later used teargas to disperse pockets of protesters on a main shopping street nearby.

Hours earlier, Erdogan had told thousands of supporters in the Black Sea city of Samsun that the unrest had played into the hands of Turkey's enemies.

A crowd of some 15,000 of his AK Party faithful cheered and waved Turkish flags as he called on the public to give their answer to demonstrations at the ballot box when Turkey holds municipal elections next March.

The rally in the party stronghold was the fourth in a series of mass meetings which Erdogan has called since protests began in Istanbul at the start of June in an unprecedented challenge on the streets to his 10-year rule.

The unrest was triggered when police used force against campaigners opposed to plans to develop Gezi Park which adjoins Taksim Square, but they quickly turned into a broader show of anger at what critics call Erdogan's growing authoritarianism.

The blunt-talking 59-year-old, who has led Turkey through an economic boom and still enjoys broad popular support, went on the offensive again, saying an "interest rate lobby" of speculators in financial markets had benefited from the unrest.

"Who won from these three weeks of protests? The interest rate lobby, Turkey's enemies," Erdogan said from a stage emblazoned with his portrait and a slogan calling for his supporters to "thwart the big game" played out against Turkey.

"Who lost from these protests? Turkey's economy, even if to a small extent, tourism lost. They overshadowed and stained Turkey's image and international power," he said.

SOCIAL DIVISIONS

In a speech appealing to conservative grassroots support, Erdogan accused those involved in the protests in Turkey's main western cities of being disrespectful towards Islam, the religion of the vast majority of the population of 76 million.

"Let them go into mosques in their shoes, let them drink alcohol in our mosques, let them raise their hand to our headscarved girls. One prayer from our people is enough to frustrate their plans," Erdogan said, before tossing red carnations to the crowd after his speech.

The protests have underlined divisions in Turkish society between religious conservatives who form the bedrock of Erdogan's support and more liberal Turks who have swelled the ranks of peaceful demonstrators.

Erdogan, who won a third consecutive election in 2011 with 50 percent support, sees himself as a champion of democratic reform, and has been riled by the protests and by international condemnation coming mainly from key trade partner Germany.

During his decade in power, which has seen him unchallenged on the political stage, Erdogan has curbed the powers of an army that toppled four governments in four decades and pursued an end to 30 years of Kurdish rebellion.

But he brooks little dissent. Hundreds of military officers have been jailed on charges of plotting a coup against him.

A court near Istanbul said on Friday it will announce on August 5 its verdict on nearly 300 defendants, including academics, journalists and politicians, accused of separate plots to overthrow the government.

On Sunday, Erdogan will address a rally in the eastern city of Erzurum, also an AK Party stronghold.

Newborn Photography For The Beginner - SubmitYourArticle.com

I have been involved with photography for many years, I started my interest when I was about 12 which is more years ago than I care to remember. Back then my mother had set up her own darkroom in the house and I would join here in there watching the magic of pictures appearing from nowhere.

A lot has changed over the last few years in Photography, as well as my Life. But although equipment and styles have changed there a lot of fundamentals that remain the same.

One of the biggest changes came for me when I became a parent myself, before then I mostly took portfolio pictures for performers. But once I was presented with this tiny little baby I found a new love in Photography as well as my life.

Newborns are one of the best things there are to take pictures of, especially if you want to make a career out of photography. Due to the emotion and love attached to newborns, as long as you take a good picture people will love it. Because of the emotions involved with babies, coupled with trends set by geniuses such as Ann Getty, there is now a huge market for newborn photographers, especially creative or contemporary photographers.

All though Newborns don't move much it does take quite a bit to get the perfect shots so here a few handy tips that I have learnt along the way.

First of all spend a little time with baby and mum when you arrive don't be afraid to ask for a hold of the baby. There are a couple of good reasons for this 1. If mum is at ease it helps relax the baby 2. Just holding a baby will help you bond with it and looking into those eyes and checking it's little hands and feet will help you fall in love with their baby which will translate into your pictures.

I also prefer to take the studio to them, as Mum is still adjusting and baby is just getting used to their surroundings they generally feel more at ease. As most baby photos will be just in a diaper (saves a lot of mess) make sure the room is nice and warm this will also help baby relax. Once the room is warm have some back ground music going that mum would normally listen too or if the baby is less than 7 days old a recording of a heart beat can be very effective.

When planning a time to take newborn photographs try and find out what time baby feeds around, this will be around about time but at least it gives you an Idea most baby's will feed every 2 hours be milk drunk for a little while which is a great time to put them in positions with eyes open. Then probably go back to sleep until the next feed. You need to allow time for feedings when booking also nappy changes and vomit changes. (not just the baby)

These are just a few things to consider, for more tips on Baby photography read my next article on newborn photography which I will be publishing in one week.
