Maine fishermen expect record prices for scallops

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) ? Maine scallop fishermen expect to get record prices for their catch this season with strong global demand and a diminished supply from Japan and other competing, scallop-producing nations.

The weak U.S. dollar also is helping boost prices, said Dana Temple, who owns Crescent Bay Inc. seafood company in Cape Elizabeth.

"The prices these guys are going to get are probably going to be higher than they've ever gotten in the history of this fishery," said Temple, who's been selling scallops for 35 years. The higher price for fishermen also means consumers will pay more in restaurants and food stores.

Sea scallops, which are similar to but bigger than bay scallops, have been harvested along the Maine coast since the late 1800s, and at times, it has been the state's second most-valuable seafood, behind lobsters.

The state's scallops are considered high quality because they're brought to shore the same day boats drag them off the ocean floor with devices that look like big metal mesh bags or divers harvest them by hand. The large boats that drag for scallops on Georges Bank off southern New England can spend five days or more at sea before they bring their catch to port. The scallops are shucked at sea, with the shells thrown back into the ocean.

But Maine's fishery has had its ups and downs, with fishing increasing sharply when scallops are plentiful. In the 1980s and '90s, Maine fishermen routinely harvested well over a million pounds of scallop meat in state waters, with the catch valued at $5 million to $10 million a year. The harvest peaked at 3.8 million pounds worth $15 million in 1983.

In recent years, the catch has fallen off sharply, which regulators blame on overfishing. Fishermen caught 195,000 pounds valued at $1.6 million in Maine waters last year, according to the Department of Marine Resources. That was just a drop in the bucket compared to the entire U.S. wild catch, which totaled 58 million pounds valued at $455 million.

Still, scallops provide a supplemental income in the winter for fishermen who go after lobsters, groundfish and sea urchins at other times.

Maine instituted measures two years ago to help restore scallop populations and address overfishing. It shut down 20 percent of the coastline to scallop fishing, froze the number of fishing licenses, shrunk the season, increased the legal size limit and limited the daily catch. The areas closed to fishing are scheduled to open after the current season ends.

There are signs the conservation efforts have started to pay off. In Cobscook Bay near Canada, the mass of scallops increased five-fold in one area just a year after it was closed to fishing. Fall surveys show promise in some, but not all, of the other closed areas.

"I think it's coming back," said James Ackley, a Machias fisherman. "But it took 12 to 15 years to get where it was, so it won't get back overnight."

The Maine scallop season began Dec. 17 and runs through March. Its opening day drew lots of boats, especially to Cobscook Bay. There, fishermen reported smaller and fewer scallops than expected, prompting the Department of Marine Resources to call a meeting with fishermen this week to get a handle on what's going on.

The scallop population is highly variable from place to place, and fishermen won't know for certain how successful the conservation efforts have been until closed areas are reopened next year, said Robin Alden, director of Penobscot East Resource Center, a Stonington-based nonprofit that works on fishery issues in eastern Maine.

"We don't know yet if the scallop closed areas are going to replenish," she said. "It'll probably be yes in some places and no in others. It depends on whether you chose the right areas in the first place and then what Mother Nature does with it."

But for the scallops fishermen get, the price will likely be high. Ackley and others expect perhaps $10 a pound or even more.

The U.S. scallop market has been strong in recent years, with the per-pound price that fishermen received rising 28 percent from 2009 to 2010 to $7.92 a pound.

With Japanese scallop exports way down after last March's tsunami and nuclear disaster, supplies remain tight and prices will likely stay high, Temple said. Although there's little, if any, health threat from Japanese scallops, buyers don't want to pay high prices for scallops that the public is wary of, he said.

"Japan used to send hundreds of loads of product over here, and it's tough to sell it now," Temple said.

The higher prices and rebounding scallop populations are good news for Maine fishermen, Ackley said. But he's concerned those factors could also result in more fishing that would send stocks plummeting again.

Maine sells 800 scallop fishing licenses a year, but last year, only 234 fishermen actually caught scallops. If the population and price are good enough, more could head out this year.

"I think the effort will be more this year than it's been for four or five years," Ackley said. "And I believe next year there will be even more effort."

New Jersey Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov will be partying in high style this week at France?s chic alpine resort Courchevel

Spies say the Russian billionaire and budding politician arrived over the weekend via no less than six helicopters delivering an entourage of 24. Prokhorov is taking up residence in a $45 million chalet, they added. And he?s bringing in European celebrity chef Wout Bru to prep his favorite meal. After a security team scoured area [...]

Florida Panthers and Maple Leafs: Tuesday's Pregame Notes

VersteegTOSaw a lot of blue-and-white license tags in the Sawgrass Mills parking lot today.

What does that mean??

Nothing I guess. Just throwing it out there.

(The above shot is of Panthers winger Kris Versteeg addressing the Toronto media. There were a few of us South Florida folk there too.)

-- Not a whole lot of news out of today.

Stephen Weiss is out of the game so your Florida Panthers top line?

(Drum roll)....

Tomas Fleischmann, Shawn Matthias, Matt Bradley.

Actually, I could see a lot of energy coming out of these three. Matthias is playing great.

Still, you hate to see Weiss out of the lineup. Different team, historically, when he's not there.

"As a coach you just keep banging on that drum,'' Kevin Dineen said of Weiss, "because he?s a guy to reach for in all key situations.''

-- Jose Theodore doesn't speak on game days because of days (re: lots of media) like today.

He was very discreet in sneaking out the back door of the locker room.

I saw you bubba.

Theodore in net versus the Leafs.

-- Any updates on the other six injured players?

No.

The silence around the Panthers is deafening. I'll get some updates tonight. Just don't ask me how.

-- Erik Gudbranson told the Canadian media that it wasn't his call in whether he would stay here or play for Team Canada in the world juniors.

He said all the right things. Losing the gold medal game last year "still leaves a bitter taste,'' so going back and winning it this year in Canada would be cool.

But, he added, it's tough to leave your team for a month -- especially an NHL team. The Panthers made the right decision in keeping him, Gudbranson said.

Maddencruiser-- Our good pal Mike Russo (@Russostrib on Twitter) says former Devils center John Madden is working out in Minnesota waiting for that call to come back.

Word is the Panthers are interested.?

Madden, who won two Cups with the Devils, was part of the Blackhawks 2010 title team. Now 38, Madden scored 12 goals for the Wild last season.

Why not?

-- Talked a little hockey with Sportsnet's Jeff Marek and Yahoo's Greg Wyshynski (puckdaddy.com)?on Tuesday. You can listen to it at another time.

-- Back on the radio tonight around 7 to talk up the Panthers/Leafs tilt on Toronto's own AM 640. You can tune in here.

-- Mark Cullen is back with the Panthers and it seems like the problem with him not making it to Boston last week was timing. He had to clear waivers and couldn't do so with such a quick turnaround.?

He's happy to be back and said if you're going to miss a game in the NHL, it's good to be an 8-0 loss.

"No offense to him,'' Dineen said, "but he wouldn't have made much of a difference.''

Cullen laughed when I repeated that quote.

-- With Cullen in, Gudbranson is back on D.

The Panthers are 0-4 when rolling seven defensemen.

?It?s not a great formula for us obviously,'' Dineen quipped.

Letting go of memories supports a sound state of mind, a sharp intellect--and superior recall

In Brief

  1. We can will ourselves to forget; a neural circuit like the one that inhibits actions governs the ability to reject memories we neither want nor need.
  2. Emerging data provide support for Sigmund Freud?s controversial theory of repression, by which unwanted memories are shoved into the subconscious.
  3. The inability to forget can impede emotional recovery in trauma victims; it is also associated with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.
  4. If you practice rebuffing recollections, you are likely to get better at it.

Solomon Shereshevsky could recite entire speeches, word for word, after hearing them once. In minutes, he memorized complex math formulas, passages in foreign languages and tables consisting of 50 numbers or nonsense syllables. The traces of these sequences were so durably etched in his brain that he could reproduce them years later, according to Russian psychologist Alexander R. Luria, who wrote about the man he called, simply, ?S? in The Mind of a Mnemonist.

BANDA ACEH, Indonesia (AP) ? A girl who was swept away in the Indian Ocean tsunami seven years ago said Friday she broke down in tears this week after tracking down her parents, who had long lost hope of finding her alive.

The 15-year-old showed up in Aceh province's hard-hit town of Meulaboh earlier this week, saying that not long after the wave hit she was "adopted" by a woman who called her Wati and forced her to beg, sometimes beating her and keeping her in the streets until 1 a.m.

When the teen stopped bringing in money, she was told, "Go ahead, leave ... go find your parents then, they're in Meulaboh."

With only patchy memories about her past ? she was only 8 when the tsunami hit, an age where most children don't know their relatives' full names ? Wati began her search, telling people she thought her grandfather was "Ibrahim."

She met a pedicab driver in Meulaboh, who brought her to a man by that name. Though she didn't look familiar, he, in turn, quickly summoned her parents.

"When I saw my mother, I knew it was her," said the wide-eyed girl, her hair cropped close to her head. "I just knew."

The family, who say the girl's original name is Meri Yuranda, is also now convinced.

The Dec. 26, 2004, tsunami that killed 230,000 people in a dozen nations hit Aceh ? closest to the epicenter of the magnitude-9.1 quake that spawned the towering waves ? the hardest.

With tens of thousands of bodies washed to sea in that province alone, many families continue to cling to hope of finding lost loved ones. Reunions, however, are rare. And all announced in the last five years have turned out to be untrue. Even so, some mothers continue to believe a child is theirs even after DNA tests prove otherwise.

Either way, without any challenges to the claims, Wati now has a family.

Yusniar binti Ibrahim Nur, the mother, told The Associated Press she had all the evidence she needed.

"She has her father's face," the 35-year-old woman said by telephone. "And when I saw the scar over her eye and mole on her hip, I was even more sure."

It doesn't worry her, she said, that the girl and her husband have different accounts of what happened on the day the tsunami hit their tiny village of Ujong Baroh just outside of Meulaboh.

Wati remembers her father putting her into a boat with her younger sister, long presumed dead as well, and then getting separated. She says she remembers being surrounded by water and crying.

Her father says he put both of his daughters on the roof of their house hoping they'd be safe.

"Maybe she fell into the boat, maybe someone helped her. I just don't know," said Yusniar.

"I just thank God my prayers have been answered," she said. "For years, I searched everywhere. I'd really given up."

Saturday 24th December, 2011 (ANI)

Festive fever gripped people across northeast and north India as Christmas is just around the corner and people rejoiced by singing Christmas carols and exchanging gifts with each other.

A mesmerizing scenario was witnessed in Agartala as people were seen singing and enjoying Christmas carols on the streets.

Davis, a carol singer, said that the festival of Christmas would bring prosperity and happiness in the lives of people.

"2000 years ago in a simple manger he (Jesus) was born as a prince of peace and his message was sowing the seeds of peace in the world and in the hearts of people, in the families, in the societies. Today we need that peace in our families, within ourselves and the communities in which we live in," he said.

Small girls were seen dressed as fairies and boys dressed as Santa Claus- in his trademark red dress, with long, white beard.

Shopkeepers have also registered a rise in the sale of decorative items during this festive season.

A large number of tourists thronged to picturesque town of Shimla to participate in celebrations of Christmas and New Year.

Local hoteliers and travel agents expressed happiness, as their business boomed.

"Entire Shimla and all the members of association of travel agents along with Hotels are very excited for the Christmas preparations. We have been receiving many bookings for Christmas and New Year celebrations. We have already done with 90 percent of occupancy and if there will be snowfall, more numbers of tourists are expected," said Naren Shahi, a travel agent. (ANI)

Health Tip: Use Medications Safely (HealthDay)

(HealthDay News) -- If your child isn't feeling well and needs an over-the-counter medication recommended by your pediatrician, the American Academy of Family Physicians offers these safety guidelines:

  • Make sure the medicine treats only your child's symptoms, nothing more.
  • Make sure any caregivers know the correct timing, dosage and type of medication your child needs.
  • Always read the medication's label and follow directions carefully.
  • Keep medications stored in their original packaging, so you can easily refer to instructions.
  • Never give cough and cold medication to a child younger than age 4 or aspirin to anyone younger than age 18.
  • Don't combine medications unless your child's pediatrician says it's OK to do so.
  • Don't give any adult medication to a child.

UMG v. Veoh: victory has never been so pyrrhic

The US appeal court has ruled that "YouTube on steroids" site Veoh can't be sued for copyright infringement under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. Judge Raymond Fisher said that rights holders (like UMG) were in a better place to identify infringing content than the video sharing site, putting the burden of finding and reporting dodgy vids on the record company's shoulders. The old-slugger's victory means that Viacom has less of a leg to stand on in its upcoming appeal against YouTube, since Judges can use the case as precedent to make their decisions. Sadly, victory will ring hollow for Veoh since the onslaught of litigation caused it to file for chapter seven bankruptcy before getting flogged on the cheap to Qlipso last year.

New source of stem cell generation pioneered

A process that prompts a single gene to generate millions of supercharged stem cells, which can then turn into any kind of cell a body needs to repair itself, has been patented at the University of Central Florida.

Stem cells have long been regarded as a holy grail of sorts in the medical world, because they hold so much potential for treating and perhaps curing some of the most challenging diseases in our time, such as Alzheimer's,Parkinson's and diabetes.

But a limited supply of stem cells and ethical issues associated with cells from embryonic donors have stalled progress on many fronts. For the past decade, researchers around the world have tried to generate embryonic-like stem cells from adult donors. To achieve stem cells this way, several genes have been required. And many of those genes have been known to trigger cancer. UCF's approach, called Induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cell technology, minimizes the risk because only one gene (Nanog) is used in the process.

A study described in Science noted that the gene, which had not been used by others, is not linked to cancer. The study can be seen at: http://www.sciencemag.org/site/products/lst_20070420.xhtml

"This technology has the potential of literally changing the entire landscape of regenerative medicine," said Kiminobu Sugaya, the lead researcher and a professor at UCF's College of Medicine. "This technology demonstrates the ability to use a patient's own cells for treatment of a wide range of illness, injury or disease."

Sugaya has been investigating the potential use of stem cells in treating Alzheimer's disease for years. He holds dozens of patents including the one for this iPS technology, which was recently licensed to Progenicyte, an emerging biopharmaceutical company Sugaya founded in 2008. Sugaya and Progenicyte will now begin extensive collaborate efforts to advance this new technology from the lab to the treatment of patients.

With better access to stem cells, scientists may be able to open the body's healing power more quickly, giving Alzheimer, Parkinson, diabetes, cancer and heart disease patients hope that their own cells may help them get rid of these diseases, Sugaya said.
